What Causes Laptop Battery Swelling and What to Do

A laptop that suddenly rocks on a desk, has a lifting trackpad, or will not close properly is not simply showing its age. These are common signs of a swollen battery, and the device should be switched off and assessed promptly. Understanding what causes laptop battery swelling helps you avoid a potentially hazardous fault and make a sensible decision about repair or replacement.

A swollen lithium-ion battery is not something to push back into place, pierce or ignore. The pressure can damage the screen, keyboard, trackpad and internal components. In rare cases, a badly compromised battery can also overheat or catch fire.

What causes laptop battery swelling?

Most modern laptops use lithium-ion or lithium-polymer batteries. They are efficient, lightweight and rechargeable, but they rely on carefully controlled chemical reactions. When that chemistry breaks down, gases can form inside the battery cells. As the gases build up, the battery casing expands.

Swelling is therefore a symptom of battery failure rather than a cosmetic issue. It can happen in older devices, but age is only one part of the picture. Heat, charging habits, physical damage and manufacturing faults can all shorten a battery's service life.

Normal ageing and charge cycles

Every rechargeable battery has a finite lifespan. Each time it is charged and discharged, its internal materials degrade a little. After several years of regular use, the battery may hold less charge, run hotter or become less stable.

A battery that spends much of its life in a laptop used daily for work will generally wear faster than one used occasionally. That does not mean every old laptop battery will swell, but the risk rises as the battery ages and its chemical condition deteriorates.

Excess heat

Heat is one of the biggest contributors to battery damage. Laptops naturally generate warmth when running demanding software, handling video calls, charging, gaming or performing updates. Problems arise when that heat cannot escape.

Using a laptop on a duvet, sofa or carpet can block ventilation. Leaving it in a hot car, near a radiator, or in direct sunlight can have the same effect. Dust-clogged fans and a failing cooling system can also lead to higher internal temperatures over time.

For business laptops that stay docked all day, heat can come from both the laptop itself and its environment. A crowded desk, poor airflow or a device working hard with multiple monitors can place extra strain on an ageing battery.

Staying at full charge for long periods

Many people keep their laptop connected to mains power throughout the working day. Modern devices are designed to manage charging and should stop actively charging once full, so being plugged in is not automatically harmful. However, prolonged time at 100% charge, particularly in a warm environment, can accelerate long-term battery wear.

Some manufacturers include battery health settings that limit charging to around 80% when a laptop is regularly used at a desk. Whether this is worthwhile depends on the model and how portable the device needs to be, but it can be useful for devices that rarely leave the office.

Faulty chargers, cables or charging circuits

A poor-quality, damaged or incorrect charger can cause unstable power delivery. This does not always directly create swelling, but it can contribute to heat, charging problems and stress on the battery management system.

The charging circuit inside the laptop matters too. If it is faulty, the battery may not be charged or monitored correctly. This is one reason a swollen battery should be professionally inspected rather than simply replaced without checking the rest of the device.

Use the manufacturer-supplied charger where possible, or a reputable replacement with the correct voltage, wattage and connector. USB-C charging has made laptops more convenient, but not every USB-C power supply provides enough power for every model.

Deep discharges and long-term storage

Letting a laptop battery run completely flat repeatedly can shorten its useful life. Lithium-ion batteries do not respond well to being left discharged for months either. A laptop stored in a drawer, garage or spare room may appear fine at first, then develop a battery fault when it is eventually charged again.

If a device will be unused for an extended period, store it somewhere cool and dry with the battery partly charged. Around 40% to 60% is generally better than fully charged or completely empty. Check it periodically rather than leaving it untouched for years.

Physical damage and manufacturing defects

A dropped laptop, liquid damage or a bent chassis can damage a battery internally, even if the laptop still switches on. Swelling may develop later rather than immediately after the incident.

Occasionally, a battery fails early because of a manufacturing defect. This is less common, but it is possible. If a relatively new laptop begins to bulge, stop using it and check whether the manufacturer offers a warranty repair or battery programme.

Signs your laptop battery may be swollen

Swelling is often visible before it becomes severe. The clearest signs are a raised or stiff trackpad, a keyboard that sits unevenly, gaps around the case, or a screen that no longer closes flush with the base.

You may also notice that the laptop wobbles on a flat surface, screws appear to be pushing outward, or the case is harder to open. Battery life may be poor, charging may become unreliable, and the device may run unusually hot. These symptoms can have other causes, but physical distortion should always be treated seriously.

Apple MacBooks can show swelling through a trackpad that becomes difficult to click. On many Windows laptops, the underside of the chassis may bow outwards. Do not assume the issue is harmless because the laptop is still working.

What to do if your laptop battery is swollen

The safest approach is straightforward: stop using the laptop, disconnect the charger and arrange a professional assessment. Avoid charging it again, especially if the case is visibly distorted or the battery is hot.

Do not press on the swollen area or try to force the laptop shut. Never puncture, cut, crush or dismantle a damaged lithium battery. It can release harmful chemicals and may ignite if its internal layers are breached.

If the laptop is stable, cool and still usable without pressure on the case, you may be tempted to copy important files before arranging a repair. Data protection matters, particularly for business devices, but safety comes first. If there is any heat, smell, hissing, smoke or significant deformation, leave the device switched off and move away from it. Do not attempt to transport a smoking or burning battery.

A repair technician can safely remove and dispose of the battery, inspect the chassis and charging system, and fit a suitable replacement where the laptop is otherwise in good condition. For a device with a damaged screen, trackpad or motherboard, replacement may be better value than repair. The right answer depends on the laptop's age, specification, repair cost and the importance of recovering its data.

Can a swollen laptop battery be prevented?

No battery lasts forever, but sensible care can reduce avoidable stress. Keep vents clear, use the laptop on a hard surface, and address overheating or fan noise before it becomes a larger problem. Use a suitable charger and replace damaged leads promptly.

For laptops that are permanently desk-based, check whether the manufacturer provides a battery charge limit or conservation mode. When storing a spare laptop, keep it in a cool, dry place with a partial charge and switch it on every few months.

Businesses should also include battery condition in routine device checks. A laptop that is overheating, losing charge quickly or showing case distortion should be removed from day-to-day use before it damages itself or interrupts an employee's work. Keeping current backups means an unexpected hardware fault is far less likely to become a data-loss problem.

A swollen battery is a repair issue that rewards early action. If you spot the warning signs, switch the laptop off and have it checked by a qualified local workshop. A timely battery replacement can protect the device, the information stored on it and the people using it.
